AT&T inked a new voice and data services contract with Evanston Northwestern Healthcare (ENH) of Chicago, an academic health organization comprised of three hospitals and 65 medical offices and facilities.

The five-year contract calls for AT&T (News - Alert) to deliver a Synchronous Optical Network (SONET) ring, which is an optical-fiber network backbone; as well as its GigaMAN service, which is a dedicated fiber-optic Ethernet service. With these services combined, ENH will be able to open a new data center. The system will also protect the health organization against possible service outages.

"We are virtually a paperless healthcare institution, so constant access to our voice and data communications is essential to our operations," said ENH's CIO Tom Smith in a statement. "The solution provided by AT&T safeguards against detrimental service outages by delivering increased uptime for our network and core applications, enabling our staff to focus on our number one priority, delivery of excellent patient care."

AT&T recently made news as it announced it being tapped by customer contact support company Global Response of Technology River, Michigan to provide the technology needed to deploy a new customer call center in the rural northern area of the state. Under a new contract, AT&T will provide Global Response with a high-speed digital network and data services for its new call center, which will open on September 5, in Iron River, Michigan. The new call center will initially employ 20 to 40 people, and as many as 85 within 24 months.
