Digium Intros AsteriskNOW Software Appliance

Digium ( News - Alert) introduced on Wednesday its first software appliance, the AsteriskNOW, the open source distribution of its Asterisk platform, which features a Digium-designed GUI.
AsteriskNOW features a new setup wizard, which serves as a guide for users for the installation process, which lasts only about 30 minutes. Included in the AsteriskNOW distribution are all the Linux components needed to run, debug, and build Asterisk ( News - Alert) for a business setting. The AsteriskNOW GUI gives administrators the opportunity to add, modify and delete users. Download options include ISO/CD Image, VM Player image, Xen universal guest image and LiveCD (burn and boot).
“Digium appreciates the initial response to AsteriskNOW. We placed the initial beta version on AsteriskNOW.org last month and have experienced over 2,000 downloads per day without any promotion! Our goal of reducing the complexity of installing and using Asterisk will expand the market for Digium into more mainstream use,” commented Mark Spencer, president of Digium and creator of Asterisk in a statement. “Unlike other Linux distributions used to deploy Asterisk, AsteriskNOW does not have unnecessary components that could compromise security or performance.”
AsteriskNOW is based on the recently released Asterisk 1.4. Asterisk 1.4 was introduced by Digium back in September. Asterisk 1.4 is the first major release of Asterisk since the release of Asterisk 1.2 in November 2005. The latest version has over 20 new functionality additions including IPFAX compatibility, unified messaging  capabilities and Jabber/Jingle/GoogleTalk protocol compatibilities.
