The Evolving Network and its Future Potential

TMCnet Contributing Editor

What was once a passive means of transferring information from one place to another has now become the key enabler of new forms of collaboration, new business models, new forms of globalization and outsourcing and new forms of computing. The telecommunications network is evolving and can now support an unprecedented degree of globalization for large enterprises.

AT&T (News - Alert), in its latest white paper, Next Generation Network Series: The Evolving Network, goes into great detail on how the telecommunications network is changing for the better and becoming more intelligent and agile. New technologies at every layer of the network are providing increased flexibility and agility.

This white paper explains how there is also a new, more expansive view of the network emerging to reflect an intelligent repository of content, functions and applications. This network is viewed as a distributed computing utility that is providing the foundation for a global computing grid. Examples of this evolution are evident in network-centric hosting, content distribution, multi-layer on-line gaming and software-as-a-service.

New service opportunities are also popping up, such as Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology which can be used to tag everything from individual items to entire pallets of products. Network capabilities will also establish the foundation for complex services built with service-oriented architectures to enable the rapid assembly of products.

Click on the link above the read this white paper in its entirety as it examines how new technologies will allow for new possibilities, but new business models are necessary to bring such possibilities to life.
