Alcatel-Lucent has agreed to deploy a CDMA2000 1xEV-DO Revision A (Rev. A) high-speed wireless network for China Unicom (News - Alert) on the island of Macau.

Via a new contract, Alcatel-Lucent will provide hardware and software upgrades to existing CDMA2000 base stations supplied by the former Lucent Technologies (News - Alert) (prior to merging into the Alcatel-Lucent company). Following the completion of the upgrades, China Unicom will be equipped with the tools needed to offer high-speed mobile data services to users across Macau including broadcasting and video telephony.

“This win with China Unicom in Macau is significant because it shows that Alcatel (News - Alert)-Lucent is already delivering on the promise set out during the merger,” noted Frederic Rose, president of Alcatel-Lucent Asia Pacific, in a statement.

Rose continued: “The company now occupies a leading position in wireless thanks to the combined assets of the former Alcatel and Lucent and the recent acquisition of UMTS access components from Nortel (News - Alert).”

Alcatel-Lucent has deployed 10 CDMA2000 networks for China Unicom across China so far. The contract announced today follows a recent Alcatel-Lucent EV-DO Rev. A contract in New Zealand.

EV-DO Rev. A enables users to receive data (forward link) at speeds up to 3.1 Megabits per second (Mbps) and send data (reverse link) at speeds of up to 1.8 Mbps. These speeds enable operators to deliver multimedia services such as VoIP.

Today's news follows Alcatel-Lucent’s announcement about it inking a set of new deals with Nigeria-based Globacom—one of the country's national telecom operators, to deploy nationwide fixed and mobile networks, IP/MPLS and optical network systems. The new deals are reportedly worth $600 million.

Alcatel-Lucent’s deployments for Globacom will be part of a project that will allow the operator to extend its network capacity by integrating technologies that will support the delivery of multimedia, converged services such as triple-play of voice, data and video.
