Alcatel (News - Alert)-Lucent was tapped by Elion Enterprises, a telecom and IT provider in Estonia, for the delivery of an IP-based broadband access network. Alcatel-Lucent has already completed the first phase of the project by delivering the first nodes.

Alcatel-Lucent's DSL system will enable Elion to offer triple-play services to its reported 141,000 subscribers. The new agreement specifically calls for Alcatel-Lucent to deliver its 7302 Intelligent Services Access Manager (ISAM), an IP access platform, and its 7330 ISAM Fiber-to-the-Node (FTTN) system.

"Alcatel-Lucent is presently helping us in a fast and efficient way with DSL deployment and that is critical to our business. Their IP access platform and experience in broadband access will enable us to evolve further in our triple play offering and expand to even higher bandwidth services," said Toivo Praakel, director of Elion’s Internet and Datacom Division, in a statement.

Alcatel-Lucent also announced this week that it teamed up with semiconductor manufacturer Freescale to speed up the adoption of fiber-to-the-home technologies by jointly developing gigabit passive optical networking (GPON) technology and interoperability specifications for vendors of terminal equipment.

Via agreements with Freescale, now terminal vendors can license technologies, including reference designs and support for GPON that is compliant with Alcatel-Lucent's 7342 ISAM fiber-to-the-user (FTTU) suite of products. Alcatel-Lucent has agreed to make available support services required to promote interoperability for vendors under a separate agreement with the company.
