Tatara Receives VoIP Patent For Mobile Users

Mobile convergence product supplier Tatara Systems has been issued a patent that enables any IP-connected device to make or receive voice calls tied to a user's mobile identity.

The patent is designated U.S. Patent No. 7,136,651, "Mobile Services Control Platform Providing Converged Voice Service."

Tatara implements the technology in Mobile Services Convergence (News - Alert) Portfolio of products for both femtocell and PC convergence solutions. Through it, users can make and receive voice calls through a softphone on a PC (laptop, desktop, ultra-mobile PC, or PDA) over any IP network (including Wi-Fi, Ethernet, and WiMAX) using their mobile phone number. The user benefits by using a single VoIP identity or phone number for all their devices.

When someone calls the user's mobile number, the call can be received on the IP-connected device, if the user chooses to redirect the call. The solution enables mobile operators to offer a value added service to augment its existing PC-based connectivity services, without requiring any changes to the mobile operator's network.

Tatara implements the technology in its Convergence Server, which the company claims is the industry's first SIP-based fixed mobile convergence (FMC) application server to focus on an all-IP approach to core network integration for PCs and femtocells.
