Reverse Outsourcing: AT&T Opens 425 New Jobs in Indiana

AT&T (News - Alert) Indiana has announced that it will open 425 new jobs in the state’s capital this year - part of a "relocation initiative" aimed to regain positions that were previously outsourced.

The new employees will be handling AT&T Yahoo High Speed Internet accounts, including assisting subscribers in installing the equipment and providing information about the service. AT&T will be investing $4.6 million for this expansion.

In a published report, Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels, who recently celebrated the job growth in the region with Indianapolis Mayor Bart Peterson and AT&T President George Fleetwood, said, “AT&T committed to invest more in Indiana, and the company is as good as its word. AT&T has connected dozens of small towns across the state to the Web, and we are getting hundreds of news jobs, all the result of telecom deregulation and video reform.”

Indianapolis Mayor, Bart Peterson, is equally pleased that AT&T is investing in the city. He said, “In this highly competitive global economy, companies have more choices now than ever when it comes to expansion options. It says a great deal about our city and state that a premier telecommunications and entertainment company like AT&T chose to invest and grow here.”

Daniels signed House Bill 1279 into law in March 2006 – a bill which has helped set the right environment for new competitive choices. It aims to bring new investments in advanced broadband services across Indiana. The law made the new jobs for the city possible.

Fleetwood acknowledged the governor’s initiative in encouraging telecom providers to invest in the state.

“We applaud all the visionary leaders that helped put Indiana at the front of a progressive telecom-reform movement that has since swept the country,” he said. “These jobs could have gone anywhere in the country. But they are here because Indiana created an environment that encourages companies like AT&T to invest. I'm pleased that we are expanding our operations here at home.”
