Earthlink Turns to Cloudmark to Protect Against Messaging Abuse

TMCnet Contributing Editor

The term “messaging abuse” has yet to enter my mind when I open my computer in the morning to get my new messages for the day. I do, however, think “junk mail” or “spam” and “phishing” as I see plenty of those messages and waste plenty of time deleting them before moving on to genuine messages that must be acknowledged.

Internet service providers (ISP) are thinking in terms of messaging abuse as their subscribers are dealing with it daily and many have lost patience with filtering it out themselves. One ISP in particular has responded to the complaints of its customers by selecting Cloudmark Authority to help fight messaging abuse.

Earthlink (News - Alert) will apply Cloudmark Authority software at the network level in order to protect the company’s more than 5 million subscribers from spam, phishing and other messaging threats.

Cloudmark today is supporting 80 of the world’s largest service providers and mobile operators, including seven of the top 10 ISPs in North America. The company protects more than 180 million mailboxes worldwide against spam, phising and viruses.

“EarthLink is committed to evaluating and implementing technologies that help safeguard consumers against Internet abuse and the combination of Cloudmark’s accuracy and the efficiency of its solution can help us achieve that goal,” said Stephen Currie , director of product management at EarthLink, in a Tuesday statement.

“Cloudmark’s next-generation messaging security platform is designed to respond quickly to e-mail-borne threats and variants and can help us ensure that consumers have the best online experience now and in the future.”

The Cloudmark Global Threat Network, which checks more than 3.5 billion messages each day, has found that messaging abuse, such as spam, phishing and viruses, now constitute up to 95 percent of all e-mail traffic on the Internet. Such statistics have cost and revenue implications for all service providers as it consumes infrastructure resources and degrades consumers’ Internet experience.

Cloud mark offers a combination of Advanced Message Fingerprinting™ algorithms and first response data from the Global Threat Network to deliver more accurate and efficient protection against existing and emerging threats in any form, format or language. Once Cloud mark authority is deployed, service providers can benefit from dramatic savings in server, storage and other resources.

“EarthLink is a leader in providing secure, reliable connectivity and personalized messaging services to millions of subscribers,” said Hugh McCartney, CEO of Cloud mark, in Tuesday’s statement.

“Cloudmark is tuned to the needs of service providers like EarthLink who demand the most accurate and scaleable solution for filtering hundreds of millions of messages per day. From high volume spam that clogs messaging infrastructures to viruses and targeted phishing attacks that threaten subscriber privacy, Cloudmark offers service providers a complete messaging security solution,” McCartney added.
