In a move to expand its Wholesale Session Initiation Protocol (News - Alert) (SIP) Gateway VoIP product, Verizon (News - Alert) Business - ) Business announced this week that it added new capabilities to improve interactive communications for customers. New features include metered outbound local calling and directory assistance or operator services.

"Verizon Business continues to innovate and advance its VoIP solutions for wholesale customers," said Nancy Gofus, vice president of product marketing for Verizon Business. "These latest key features, combined with the proven performance of our IP network, give our wholesale customers the added edge they need to do business in the growing VoIP market."

Metered outbound local calling provides customers with more pricing flexibility. This feature is available in an initial billing time of six seconds followed by subsequent six-second billing increments, and the feature can be used to recognize and manage subscriber usage patterns more efficiently.

Wholesale customers can also advance and customize their own product suites with the directory assistance and operator service features now available with the wholesale SIP Gateway product. Wholesale customers will be provided with local, long-distance and international operator and directory assistance service round-the-clock from geographically dispersed and fully redundant call centers.

Directory assistance and operator services are offered by both automated and live operators, with 23 languages offered on the automated platform. Verizon Business' directory assistance service uses an extensive database of telephone number info that is updated daily and includes more than 160 million business, government, and residential numbers.

Verizon Business introduced a new Remote Internet Protocol (IP) Application Management Service option to help business customers better manage their information technology (IT) systems earlier this month. The service is said to provide customers with better control of their costs and increase their systems' performance and reliability.

The new option, now available for U.S. business and government customers, will enable them to rely on Verizon Business to remotely monitor and manage basic IT infrastructure and operating systems, such as Microsoft (News - Alert) Windows or Sun Solaris. The service seems to be a great option for companies that want to outsource their whole IT department management responsibilities.

Verizon Business' new management option is also a good choice for those customers that usually store their business-critical servers in a variety of settings, including at their own location, a third-party data center or in one of Verizon's more than 100 U.S. data centers.
